This time of the year for many can be very love/hate. We definitely love the summer sun, summer barbeques and heading down to the beach when the weather warms up, but when it hits 35 plus degrees, it can be a very uncomfortable period of time.

Many of us are not fortunate enough to have fantastic cooling in our home so we must find other methods to keep the home cool on scorching hot days. Even if you do have great air conditioning you should try not to put it under the pump by having it run all day.

Close Up

Keep curtains closed during the day and all windows and doors. This is to keep out the humidity and hot air. At night, once the outside temperature has dropped, open up all of your windows to ventilate the home again.

Shade

Ensure you have shade for both East and West sides of your property as this is where your home will get the most sun.

Refrain from Using Hot Appliances

Try and also put off activities that generate heat. These are things like, using the dishwasher, dryer, oven and washing machine. All of these things will generate a lot more heat in the home than you realise. Try and avoid doing this until the evening.

Fans

If you can install ceiling fans, or buy a few fans to place around your home.

Screens or Shades

Try placing bamboo shades or screens in front of your direct sun affected windows which will stop 60% – 80% percent of the sun’s heat from getting to the windows.
